Critical Literacy Activity
Have students rewrite a story from a different perspective. This can be humorous and students should be able to be creative and have fun with this activity. In addition, once students are done they then can act out their stories for the class or maybe even invite parents to come and watch!
Books On Tape ~ The Gift of Reading
Buy books at garage sales and bring them into class. Give each student in the class a book to read. Once students are able to read the book fluently, have them record themselves reading the book. Back ground music can also be added. Once all students have recorded their storys, the class goes to a younger class and gives them the books as gifts for their listening center.
Neighborhood Project
Students take pictures of their neighborhoods. They then write essays or poems about their neighborhoods. These are made into slideshow presentations and shared with another class in a different state.
Newspaper Party Planning
Students look through advertisements and are trying to find the cheapest foods and party supplies for their party. The group with the cheapest party cost will end up being the items that are purchased. This incorporates math and is an award for the class reading 2,000 + pages during independant reading time.
